What Is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results from an external force on the head disrupting the normal functioning of the brain. This differs from concussions which heal within several days of rest. Severe TBIs may lead to permanent disabilities or death.
There are two kinds of TBIs.
- Bullets or shrapnel penetrating the skull
- Brain injuries from sudden movements or impacts such as car accidents or falls but do not penetrate the skull (also known as subdural hemorrhages)
If not treated immediately, both types can lead to swelling, bleeding, and pressure within the skull. This may cause secondary damage.
Signs and Symptoms of a Brain Injury
The symptoms may be present immediately, hours, or days even, after an injury. You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms:
- Constant headaches
- Nausea or vomiting
- Seizures
- Blurred vision, or sensitivity to light
- Consciousness loss
- Slurred or difficult speech
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Memory loss or confusion
- Changes in mood and behavior
In addition to protecting your health, prompt medical treatment can also help you in your legal case.
The Long-Term Effects of Brain Injury
Some people fully recover from brain damage while some suffer from long-term effects that impact every aspect of their life. The long-term effects from a TBI can include:
- Memory loss and difficulty concentrating are examples of cognitive issues.
- Emotional and behavioral change
- Balance, coordination, or speech difficulties
- Chronic pain or headaches
- Seizure disorders
- Inability to work or loss of independence
- Changes in personality and mood
- Death or permanent disability
You deserve financial compensation and support for your injuries, no matter how severe they are.
What Causes Brain Injuries?
Many situations can lead to brain injuries. The most common causes of brain injuries include:
- Car accidents
- Accidents involving motorcycles and trucks
- Slip and fall
- Workplace accidents
- Pedestrian accidents
- Injuries caused by sports or recreation
- Violent assaults
We have extensive experience in handling brain injury cases involving accidents of all kinds. Our attorneys will fight to get you the best possible outcome, no matter what caused your injury.
How Common Are Brain Injuries?
Many are unaware of the extent of brain injuries. According to the CDC, over 1.7 million Americans experience traumatic head injuries every year – 5,600 deaths have already been linked with TBIs in Florida alone by 2022!
We see a higher-than-average number of brain injuries in Tampa. This is largely due to the large volume of accidents involving traffic. You’re not the only one who suffers from brain injuries. Legal support is available to help you on your road to recovery.
How Much Compensation Can Be Recovered?
Brain injury survivors can face high medical costs, lengthy recovery periods, and permanent changes to their quality of life as a result of being injured due to someone else’s negligence. You could be eligible for economic and other damages in such an instance.
Economic Damages
- Medical expenses (past current and future)
- Reduced earning potential or loss of income
- Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
- Home modifications or assistive equipment
Non-Economic Damages
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional trauma
- Loss of enjoyment in life
- Disfigurement or Disability
In the event of a fatality caused by an injury, survivors may be entitled to compensation for funeral costs, loss of companionship, and other damages.
Who Can Be Held Responsible?
The way the injury happened will determine who is at fault. Our team will investigate and identify the responsible parties.
- Auto accidents caused by negligent drivers
- Contractors or employers on unsafe work sites
- Slip-and-fall injuries to property owners
- Product Manufacturers (in the case of defective products).
Our attorneys are skilled at building a strong case using evidence, expert testimony, and strategic legal arguments.
Do Not Miss the Deadline for Filing Your Claim
Florida Law limits the filing of a personal injury claim within two years from the date of injury. If you wait too long, you could lose your right to receive damages. We can help you before it’s too long.
